BIORISM HAIRSPA

SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE
Background

Biorism™ Hairspa is a scientifically designed scalp care innovation that fuses nanotechnology with active plant-based ingredients to support the hair and scalp health of individuals who wear hijab or inner head coverings (anak tudung). Developed in certified European laboratories, this formulation was created to address common scalp issues associated with prolonged hijab wear, such as excessive sweating, scalp irritation, itching, and microbial imbalance.

What’s inside HairSpa?

The core innovation of Biorism™ Hairspa lies in the incorporation of SANISCALP®, an active ingredient derived from Passiflora edulis (passionfruit seeds), developed by Solabia using patented enzymatic bioconversion (Laccase Technology). The active is loaded into silica particles and infused into hijab innerwear using nanotechnology, enabling sustained delivery of scalp-benefiting actives throughout the day. Key bioactives include piceatannol dimers, antioxidants, lycopene, essential fatty acids, and vitamins A, B2, B6, and C, which collectively support scalp regeneration, nourishment, and protection. Saniscalp® has been scientifically proven through in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo studies to reduce inflammatory mediators, strengthen the scalp barrier, and rebalance the scalp microbiota—factors essential for reducing dandruff and maintaining long-term scalp health. Biorism Hairspa is dermatologically safe and can be integrated into various textile materials, lasting up to 30 washes, offering long-term wellness benefits to the user.

Scientific Evidence

To ensure the quality and safety of Biorism™ Hairspa, scientific tests were conducted with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), SIRIM, and Solabia Group France.

1. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (FESEM-EDX): This test was carried out to observe the surface structure of the fabric and check how well the Hairspa coating remained after multiple washes. It also identified the elements present in the coating, such as nano-silica that carry the key ingredients.

2. Skin Irritation Test: This test was performed to evaluate whether the Hairspa formulation is safe for skin contact, especially since it is worn for long hours under the hijab.

3. Efficacy of active ingredients: A series of in vitro and ex vivo laboratory studies were conducted. These tests were designed to assess its performance in improving scalp health through the following key mechanisms:
i. Soothes the Weakened Scalp
This set of tests aimed to examine how Saniscalp® reduces scalp inflammation caused by external stressors such as chemical treatments and heat exposure.
ii. Improves the Scalp Barrier Cohesion
These tests focused on Saniscalp®’s ability to support healthy skin cell turnover and maintain the integrity of the scalp’s barrier function.
iii. Prevents Microbiota Imbalances
This test was done to assess how Saniscalp® strengthens the scalp’s natural defenses and maintains microbiome balance.

How do I know the benefit remains after 30 washes?

FESEM Analysis (Appendix 1)
Before washing (Brand new):
The coating layer was clearly visible and firmly adhered to the fabric surface. The surface exhibited increased roughness, indicating successful and uniform application of the Hairspa active layer.

Element Analysis (EDX)
table comparison trb001 biorism report hairspa (4)
Table 1: Elemental analysis of both before washing and after 30 washes
Carbon – Showed a slight increase, likely due to the exposure of the base fabric following coating removal.

Oxygen – Remained relatively stable, showing no major change in oxidation state.

Nitrogen – Content decreased, suggesting the loss of nitrogen-containing functional groups.

Silicon (active ingredients) – Approximately 50% remaining even after 30 washes.

Conclusion
The Hairspa coating demonstrates strong initial adhesion to the fabric, effectively delivering its intended benefits. Even after 30 washes, the fabric retains its structural integrity, and traces of the coating remain visible. The presence of silica after repeated washing confirms that the adhesion of the silica-based coating is good. These findings highlight the formulation's effectiveness for short to medium-term use and provide a strong foundation for further enhancements to improve long-term durability.
2. Is it safe to use? Skin Irritation Analysis (Appendix 2)

An in vitro skin irritation test was conducted using the Reconstructed Human Epidermis Test Method – OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals No. 439. This in vitro standard method was validated by the European Centre of the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM) as in vitro test method based on reconstructed human epidermis (RhE) technology. The test was conducted to determine whether the Biorism™ Hairspa cause irritation to the in vitro skin model EpiDerm™.

Conclusion
The results showed that Biorism™ Hairspa is considered “Non-Irritant” to skin and safe for direct, prolonged contact with the scalp. The test confirmed that the product is safe and comfortable for daily use.
3. Does Saniscalp (HairSpa’s main active ingredient) work?
I. Soothes the Weakened Scalp
Inflammatory response assays were performed to measure the release of key inflammatory mediators (PGE2, and LTB4). Cell models were exposed to inflammatory stimuli (e.g., irritants, infrared radiation), followed by treatment with Saniscalp® to observe its calming effect on the scalp.
png 5 trb001 biorism report hairspa (4)
Saniscalp® helps to reduce the inflammatory mediators production, 54% of PGE2 less released and 74% of LTB4 less released, in stress conditions. Saniscalp® soothes the weakened scalp and protects it from environmental aggressions.

Protection against physical stress
An in vitro study was conducted on fibroblast cells to evaluate Saniscalp®'s protective effect against heat stress. Cells were pre-treated with 1% Saniscalp®, exposed to infrared radiation, and incubated for 48 hours. MMP-1 levels were measured using ELISA kit
png 6 trb001 biorism report hairspa (4)
Saniscalp® significantly protects by 79% the cells subjected to infrared irradiations. It helps to protect the scalp from heat during the use of hair dryer, hair styler or prolonged sun exposure.
II. Improves the Scalp Barrier Cohesion
Gene expression analysis was conducted to monitor markers of cell differentiation and proliferation (e.g., KRT19, KRT10, NOTCH1). Reconstructed epidermis models were used to observe how Saniscalp® modulates the renewal cycle and prevents scalp flaking.
png 7 trb001 biorism report hairspa (4)
Saniscalp® improves scalp barrier cohesion by boosting KRT19 expression and reducing NOTCH1 and KRT10, supporting balanced cell renewal. This helps strengthen the scalp, reduce flaking, and maintain a healthy protective barrier.
III. Prevents Microbiota Imbalances
An in vitro study was conducted using reconstructed human skin treated with 0.1% Saniscalp® for 24 hours. mRNA was extracted to measure the expression levels of antimicrobial peptides DEFB4A and S100A7 using RT-qPCR, assessing Saniscalp®’s ability to enhance the scalp’s natural defense mechanisms.
png 8 trb001 biorism report hairspa (4)
png 9 trb001 biorism report hairspa (4)
Saniscalp® increased the expression of the antimicrobial peptide S100A7 by 110% compared to placebo and significantly stimulated its neosynthesis in the scalp epidermis. This confirms its role in enhancing the scalp’s innate immunity and protecting against microbial imbalance.
Fortifies the scalp barrier
An ex vivo study was performed on scalp tissue exposed to three common yeast strains to simulate microbiota imbalance. A 1% Saniscalp® cream was applied daily for 3 days. On Day 4, the expression of SPRR2, a key barrier protein, was measured to evaluate Saniscalp®’s ability to strengthen the scalp barrier.
png 10 trb001 biorism report hairspa (4)
Saniscalp® increased SPRR2 protein expression by 5 times compared to the untreated control under microbiota stress. This indicates a significantly stronger scalp barrier and improved protection against external microbial imbalance.
Anti-dandruff effect
In vivo study on 64 volunteers with an average age of 45 years old. Application of 5 mL of a non-rinsed lotion containing SANISCALP® at 0.5% or 1% vs. Placebo, after each shampoo for 28 days. Quantification of dandruff intensity with a 10-points scale and photographies.
png 11 trb001 biorism report hairspa (4)
Saniscalp® reduced dandruff intensity by 35% after 14 days and by 54% after 28 days at 1% concentration. In a user study, 95% of participants reported reduced dandruff, itching, flaking, and scalp irritation.
Conclusion
Saniscalp® is a clinically supported, plant-derived active that delivers soothing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-dandruff benefits. Its ability to strengthen the scalp barrier, rebalance microbiota, and protect against physical and chemical stress makes it highly suitable for scalp care products like Biorism™ Hairspa, especially for hijab wearers facing long hours of scalp occlusion.
